What Is a Pallet Stacker?

A pallet stacker is a walk-behind powered lift truck: the operator stands and walks with the unit rather than riding it, and the mast raises a palletized load high enough to place it on racking, a truck bed, or a work surface. That vertical lift is what sets a stacker apart from a pallet jack, which only carries pallets a few centimetres off the floor for horizontal transport.

It fills the middle ground in material handling. Below it sits the pallet jack — transport only, no meaningful lift. Above it sits the forklift — full lift height, ride-on, and, in Canada, CSA B335 operator certification. A pallet stacker gives you racking-height lift without stepping up to a ride-on forklift, and in Canada no operator licence is required to run one.

Because it is pedestrian-operated and compact, a stacker suits stockrooms, retail backrooms, mezzanines, and light-industrial sites where a full forklift is more machine than the job needs.

Pallet stackers come in several formats, distinguished mainly by how the lift and drive are powered and by how the frame supports the load:

• Manual stacker — a hand-hydraulic unit; the operator pumps a handle to lift and pushes to move. No battery.
• Semi-electric stacker — powered lift with an electric motor, but the operator pushes the unit to move it. The Sumachay SSE15 is a semi-electric straddle stacker.
• Fully-electric stacker — both lift and drive are powered, so the operator steers rather than pushes. The Sumachay SST15 and SST15+ are fully electric walkie stackers.

• Reach stacker — a mast that reaches forward to place loads deeper into racking.

A pallet stacker has two jobs: lift and move. On every powered model the lift is driven by an electric hydraulic system — the operator raises and lowers the forks with controls on the tiller, so there is no hand-pumping. Where models differ is travel: on a semi-electric stacker the operator pushes the unit between locations, while on a fully-electric stacker the drive wheels are powered so the operator steers the load.

The forks slide into a standard pallet, the mast raises the load to racking or truck height, and the operator positions it. Straddle models use support legs that pass under or around the pallet for a compact, stable footprint; counterbalance models use a rear counterweight instead, trading footprint for the ability to handle closed-bottom pallets and skids.

• Tight aisles: the compact straddle SST15-C (2.5 m lift, 100 Ah lithium) is built for narrow spaces.
• Closed-bottom pallets, skids, or drums: the counterbalance SLCS15 (~$14,000 CAD) handles loads that straddle legs cannot.
